What is IFSC CODE ?

IFSC stands for indian financial system code

It is actually a alphanumeric code alotted to every branch of all the banks.

It is unique for each branch.

It consist of 11 alphanumeric characters in which first four characters represent the Bank Name ,fifth charcter is a zero value and last six digit represent the branch of the particular bank.

 

Where we need IFSC code?

Whenever we make an online money transaction/transfer using modes like NEFT(National Electronics Fund Transfer), RTGS(Real Time Gross Settlement ) and IMPS(Immediate Payment Service) system will ask for IFSC code of the particular branch in which beneficiary is having account. Without IFSC code transaction can never be complete.

 

Where we found IFSC Code ?

 IFSC code is printed on all the leaves of the cheque book provided by the banks to their account holders.

RBI provides the list of IFSC Code of all the banks and their respective branches.

Individual bank also provide the IFSC Code on their websites.

 

Example of IFSC code.

It is an alphanumeric code of 11 characters.

for e.g. HDFC0002707 is IFSC code of HDFC Bank situated at Hdfc Bank Ltd., Scf 50, Sector 11, Main Market, Panipat Haryana 132103

  • Here HDFC represent the Bank Name.
  • Next fifth digit is 0(zero).
  • Last six digit 002707 is unique code of this particular branch of HDFC Bank.

 

What happen if IFSC Code is Wrong?

The transaction/transfer of money will not be complete if you provide the wrong IFSC code by mistake.The money will not be transferred to beneficiary account and will be refunded to the account.
