Computer File Formats

A computer file is a collection of logically related data.Computer support different file formats.A file format is a standard way to encode information for storage in a computer file.It basically tells how information is encoded with help of bits on some digital data storage medium.There are of file formats found to support data storage like document type (.doc), image type(.png, .jpeg), music type(.mp3) or video type(.dat) etc.We are defining here some type of file formats for knowledge of students and all. 

Document File Formats | Full Forms

.DOC and .DOCX -- an abbreviation of "document"

--When you create a document in MS-Word application it is saved with ".DOC" and ".DOCX" extensions.  DOCX files are XML-based DOC files. In newer versions of Word, files are saved as the DOCX format by default.
For example :  temp.docx, student.doc etc.

 .HTML --"Hypertext Markup Language format"

--It is a extension of the standard markup langaue HTML (Hyper Text Markup langauge) basically used  while creating web pages for websites.These file can be created and edited in any of the editor notepad etc.
 

.ODT--"OpenDocument Text Document Format "

--These are the file just like .doc files but this format can be open with any open source editor or word processor such as ediors found in Linux.
 

 .pdf - "portable document format"

--It is a file format which save the data and images in an inalterable form.They universal fiel types and can be opened with any supporting application program.
 

.XLS and .XLSX- stands for "eXceL Spreadsheet"

--These are the extension of the files created in MS-Excel. The latest version of editor by default save it as .xlsx.

 

 .ODS --"OpenDocument Spreadsheet"

--It is a spreadsheet counterpart of .ODT files. Unlike XLS and XLSX files, they can be opened any open-source programs like in linux in addition to Microsoft Excel.

 

.PPT and .PPTX --"Power Point Presentation"

--It is a extension of the files created in MS-Power Point application .This file format support the presentaion type of files, PPTX is the more modern, XML-based version of the PPT file format. 

 

 .TXT --"File extension for a text file"

--It is the most basic text file format usually created and edited in Notepad editor. TXT files allow users to create text-based documents without worrying about formatting, font style, or text color.

 

Image File Formats/Extensions

.JPEG (or JPG) - "Joint Photographic Experts Group"

--JPEG is a commonly used method of lossy compression for digital images, particularly for those images produced by digital photography. 
 

.PNG - "Portable Network Graphics"

--It is a format in which image is saved in the Portable Network Graphic (PNG) format. PNG files are commonly used to store web graphics, digital photographs, and images with transparent backgrounds.

 

 .GIF - "Graphics Interchange Format"

--It's a bitmap image format which was created by CompuServe in 1987. This popular image format has a wide support base on the internet.
 

 .TIFF - "Tagged Image File"

--A TIFF file is a graphics container that stores raster images in the Tagged Image File Format (TIFF). It contains high-quality graphics that support color depths. 

 

  .PSD - "Photoshop Document"

--A . PSD file is a layered image file used in Adobe PhotoShop. PSD, which stands for Photoshop Document, is the default format that Photoshop uses for saving data.
 

 .EPS - "Encapsulated Postscript"

--Encapsulated PostScript, shortly EPS is a standard graphics file format created by Adobe in 1992. It is more like a postscript program that instructs images .

 

   .AI - "Adobe Illustrator Document"

--AI is a graphics file format created by Adobe systems. It is short for Adobe Illustrator Artwork file.

  

  INDD - "Adobe Indesign Document"

--INDD is a file extension for a page layout file used by Adobe InDesign, can also be opened using Adobe InCopy. INDD stands for INDesign Document. Contains formatting, content, styles, and linked files. Used for Desktop Publishing

 

  RAW - "Raw Image Formats"

--RAW is an image file format used by many high-end and professional digital cameras. RAW files are considered to be the best form of image file, since it does not process the picture, leaving total control of the editing to the user.
